| Women Drivers I've been trying to tell my dad ever since I have owned a car that car repair places try to rip women off. I have encountered several instances of this recently and today, I think he was finally convinced. I took my car in to get a new tire - one new tire- that's all I wanted, all I needed. The guy phoned me up when it's time for me to pick up the car and told me I needed a new tie-rod and all new brakes. He told me he could do the brakes for me for the low price of $493. I am used to this procedure by now. I have discovered that I have to ask my dad what needs doing and take the car in and get precisely that and nothing else. Inevitably they try to tell me that my car is just about to fall apart and it won't even get me home - the brakes will fail, the muffler will blow up, the tires will come off - you name it, they'll tell you it. I politely told the guy I would consult my father, see what he said, and come and pick my car up. As soon as I mentioned my dad, he didn't try to disuade me from driving the car home or try to encourage me to get anything else done. It really just pisses me off. If I couldn't rely on my dad to tell me my car is not about to fall apart, I might spend stupid amounts of money getting things done to my car that it doesn't need just because I don't know any better. Now I'm not saying that women don't necessarily know about cars - there are plenty who do - I'm just saying that mechanics are more likely to assume a woman doesn't know about cars and try to rip her off. In my case, they're pretty much right though - I really don't know anything. I should, I love my car and I love driving, so I really ought to find out something.
