Hocus Pocus

It's not important whether you believe in horoscopes or astrology or whatever. This week, I garnered some practical advice from the almost back page of this week's Nashville scene: ...reject the pressure to be anything other than exactly who you are. .. [have] the courage to ignore standards of success that don't originate in your own heart.
I suppose I could say all kinds of wonderful, intelligent things about that quote. I've felt lately the pressure to conform in so many ways. I've been told by friends and family alike that some of my ideas and wants are ridiculous and that trusting my heart (or my gut) is naive and unreliable.
I've tried to be rational and careful for years. It is not in my nature and has caused me to retreat further into myself than I knew was possible. Sometimes you have to defy convention. For certain things there are no rules, no best mode of operation. I think people sometimes people forget that. They think they can find (or hold onto) what they perceive as happiness by staying in a comfortable state. They think if they follow all the rules, they will get some kind of reward.
Life is not the Oscars. Just because you follow all the conventions, it doesn't mean you'll get "best film" in your life. Sometimes, you have to be the Cannes Film Festival. Not as many people will appreciate you, but the ones who do have good taste and will appreciate the idiosyncracy of your choices.
